Warm-ups:
Each class period begins with a warm-up. I use warm-ups to recycle skills and review the previous day's lesson. This creates a continual reference to prior knowledge while practicing the skills of reading, writing and speaking French. For example, I may write 10 curriculum-based vocabulary words on the board. The students will have a timer on the overhead counting down 10 minutes. The students have 10 minutes to create 10 sentences on notebook paper in French using the vocabulary words correctly. Sometimes I use white boards for warm-ups. Students read aloud their answers in class or present their white board to me.
Now that I teach in Kansas I have discovered new technology to use as warm-ups. We use the Duo Linguo app on the Ipads as an interactive warm-up. The students love it. We also use boxes of Sparknotes French Vocabulary study cards. Duo Linguo is way more popular, though.
Here is some feedback I received from my students about my warm-ups:
1. It improves sentence-writing skills.
2. When I see vocabulary words I haven't seen for a while, I suddenly remember them.
3. It helps improve verb tense skills.
4. It helps me to hear alternate answers from my classmates.
5. I need more time to finish my warmups.
6. Why don't you post vocabulary words and make us think of related words?
7. I like speaking answers rather than writing all the time.
