The past tense describes past events. To form the past tense you use the verb have as your helping verb except for the VANDERTRAMP verbs which use to be.
Vandertramp verbs (Dr. and Mrs. Vandertramp) are verbs that take etre as the helping verb. Here are the verbs: devenir, revenir, monter, rester, sortir, venir, aller, naitre, descendre, entrer, rentrer, tomber, retourner, arriver, mourir, partir.
For example: Je suis parti - I left Elle est sorti - She went out
With irregular verbs like etre, avoir, faire, mettre and voir the past participle is irregular too.
